Interpretation of Hebrews Chapter 9 Verse 23

Hebrews 9:23 is referring to the Old Testament sacrificial system. Under the old covenant, animals were sacrificed as a way to atone for sins and to draw near to God. In this verse, the author of Hebrews is saying that it was necessary for the physical copies of the things in the heavens, such as the tabernacle and the temple, to be cleansed with animals sacrifices. However, the heavenly things, the spiritual realities that these physical copies represented, could only be cleansed with better sacrifices. The author is referring to Jesus Christ, the ultimate and perfect sacrifice for the sins of mankind. Through Jesus’ death, the heavenly realities were made perfect, and all the spiritual cleansing that was necessary for salvation was accomplished.
