The Bible in Galatians Chapter 4 Verse 23 says:
Howbeit the [son] by the handmaid is born after the flesh; but the [son] by the freewoman [is born] through promise.
Interpretation of Galatians Chapter 4 Verse 23
In Galatians 4:23, Paul is referring to the fact that Abraham had two sons: Ishmael, born of Hagar the bondwoman, and Isaac, born of Sarah the freewoman. He is emphasizing that although Ishmael was born “after the flesh,” or through natural means, Isaac was born “through promise,” or through the promise of God. Paul is making the point that although Ishmael was born of Abraham’s own efforts, Isaac was born of God’s promise, and it is this promise that serves as an example of faith for us.
