For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the handmaid, and one by the freewoman.
Interpretation of Galatians Chapter 4 Verse 22
Galatians 4:22 is a reference to the story of Abraham and his two sons, Ishmael and Isaac. In this passage, Paul is using the story of Abraham to illustrate the difference between those under the Law (Ishmael) and those who are under grace (Isaac). Ishmael was born of the handmaid Hagar and was therefore subject to the Law given to his mother, whereas Isaac was born of the free woman Sarah and was born of the promise of God and therefore was under grace. Paul is using this example to make the point that those who are under grace are free from the Law, just as Isaac was free from the Law given to his mother.
