For before that certain came from James, he ate with the Gentiles; but when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing them that were of the circumcision.
Interpretation of Galatians Chapter 2 Verse 12
In Galatians 2:12, Paul recounts an incident involving a certain man who had come to the church from James. Before this man arrived, the church members were happily dining with Gentiles. However, upon his arrival, the man began to separate himself from the Gentiles and showed fear of them, presumably because they were not of the circumcision. Paul was displeased with the man’s behavior and viewed it as a hypocritical act because the man was not following the gospel. Paul was then prompted to confront the man and tell him that his actions were not in line with the gospel. The passage ends with Paul reminding the church that true faith is not based on works, but rather on faith in Jesus Christ.
