In 1 Thessalonians 5:20, Paul instructs the believers in Thessalonica not to despise prophesyings, which are revelations of God’s will as spoken by prophets. Paul warns the believers to take heed and not reject the prophetic message, even if it seems strange or hard to accept. He encourages them to distinguish between true prophesyings and false prophecy, so that they may accept and obey the things God has said. Through this, they can experience the guidance and comfort of God’s Spirit.
