And inasmuch as [it is] not without the taking of an oath
Interpretation of Hebrews Chapter 7 Verse 20
Hebrews 7:20 is part of a discussion of Melchizedek, a figure in the Old Testament. In verses 17-19, the author explains that Melchizedek was made a priest without any oath being taken, unlike the Levitical priests, who had to swear an oath. In verse 20, the author affirms that, in fact, Melchizedek was not made a priest without an oath. He does not explain what kind of oath was taken, but he does make it clear that some sort of oath was required. This shows that Melchizedek was a special type of priest, with a unique status in the eyes of God.
