Interpretation of Philemon Chapter 1 Verse 2
Paul is writing a letter to Philemon, a fellow Christian and believer. In this letter, Paul greets Philemon, as well as Philemon’s wife Apphia, Archippus, and the church in Philemon’s house. Paul is thanking Philemon for his generosity and the help he has given to fellow believers, and encourages him to continue to do so. Paul also expresses his hope that Philemon will receive Onesimus, a runaway slave, back into his household with love and kindness. Paul speaks of his own parental love he has for Onesimus and encourages Philemon to accept and forgive him. He asks Philemon to receive Onesimus “as a brother beloved” and to restore him to the freedom of a son, not as a slave. In conclusion, Paul blesses Philemon, wishing him grace and peace from God.
